After the 2017/18 season finished at Fratton Park back in May, it seemed to be an inevitability that both star men Jack Marriott and Marcus Maddison would be sold for millions to a Sky Bet Championship club. However, as the summer unfolded, these two Posh superstars have had such different experiences. One got his big money move to Derby County, while the other was sat playing video games as the transfer window closed.
We all knew that promotion had to be achieved in order to keep Maddison at Posh after he signed a new contract last summer and even with his assist magic and numerous good performances we missed out and finished miserably outside of the Play-Offs. In this new contract was a buy-out clause of only £2.5m, a fraction of the reported fee Posh got for Marriott. The fact that he is still on the books at the club is a massive shock.
Clubs such as Blackburn Rovers, West Brom, Aston Villa and Leeds United were all circling around Maddison over the summer. Now the wantaway winger finds himself without his preferred squad number, not included in the team photographs, excluded from the squad and unlikely to play.
Darragh MacAnthony has revealed on twitter that he expects Maddison to go out on loan to a Sky Bet Championship club, potentially with the option to buy in the January transfer window. Because of the attractive buy out clause, fans of the aforementioned clubs have been left disappointed and frustrated by the lack of a deal over the summer.
MacAnthony also revealed on twitter last month that two clubs had met the release clause but wanted to pay the fee over a four year period which did not impress the Chairman and were therefore firmly rejected. The loan transfer window remains open until 31st August, leaving clubs under three weeks to strike a deal, with negotiations for this move believed to commence tomorrow (Monday 13th August).
