After goals scored, you obviously have to look at goals conceded. Posh signed Mark Beevers this season in a bid to bring some experience into the squad. In fact, Posh’s entire first-choice back five (including the goalkeeper) are in their first season at the club. It was expected that it would take some time to gel, but Posh’s defending has been questioned on several occasions this year. The graph below shows why, with Ferguson’s side conceding more this season than during Steve Evan’s reign last season.

Posh have conceded just two less than their worst opening 24 games, which consequently came in their highest-scoring season, under Graham Westley.

Posh’s best defence was in the 2016/17 campaign when they conceded just 26 goals in their opening 24 matches. This was when Grant McCann was in charge and the likes of Ryan Tafazolli and Jack Baldwin were regulars in the defence.
