Four second half goals gave Peterborough United an emphatic 4-0 victory over struggling Southend United on Tuesday night (February 11) and saw them move into the automatic promotion places.
The first half was a cagey affair, with chances few and fair between. Ivan Toney had Posh’s best chance when Niall Mason’s cross picked up out, but the league’s top goal scorer could only fire wide.
The main talking point of the half came right towards the end, when Toney picked up a yellow card. This was his tenth of the season, and means he will miss the upcoming trips to Fleetwood Town and Burton Albion.
HALF TIME: Peterborough United 0-0 Southend United
The visitors almost took the lead just four minutes into the second half when Mark Millgan’s deflected strike from distant struck the inside of the post.
Just a minute later, Posh had the lead, when excellent play from Joe Ward ended with him playing Sikiri Dembele through. Dembele made no mistake to give score his third goal in as many games and give Posh the lead.
Just seven minutes later and it was 2-0, as Jack Taylor fired home a loose ball to double Posh’s lead.
A game rarely goes by nowadays that Ivan Toney doesn’t find the back of the net in and this one was no different.
After 70 minutes, Josh Knight’s wayward shot found Toney, who rounded the keeper and slotted home.
Three became four just four minutes later, and it was that man Toney again. Dan Butler’s corner was pinpoint for Posh’s striker, who powered a header into the top corner to complete the scoring.
