Peterborough United were in scintillating form yesterday (February 8) as they comfortably dispatched of Oxford United at London Road.
A double from Ivan Toney, as well as goals from Sikiri Dembele and Josh Knight saw Posh run out 4-0 victors, despite playing the final 25 minutes of the match with ten men after Nathan Thompson saw red for a second bookable offense.
Posh took the lead after 36 minutes when Sammy Szmodics picked up his first assist of the day, playing the ball through to Sikiri Dembele who made no mistake, slotting home to open the scoring.
After the first goal, Posh pushed on looking for a second and only superb defending denied them doubling their lead before half time (see below).
HALF TIME: Peterborough United 1-0 Oxford United.
Posh did double their lead just 11 minutes into the second half thanks to a wonderful team goal, that started with some excellent defending from captain Mark Beevers.
The ball was played through Posh’s midfield, before full-back Dan Butler played through Sammy Szmodics. Posh’s number 9 made no mistake with an excellent ball across goal and there was Ivan Toney to give Posh a two-goal advantage.
Posh looked like they were going to be in for a difficult final quarter of the game when Nathan Thompson was shown a second yellow card 63 minutes in.
However the red didn’t affect Posh, who still looked in complete control of the game, and they put it to bed in the 77th minute.
Dan Butler’s free-kick was flicked in at the near post by Ivan Toney to score his second goal of the match and put the game beyond any doubt.
Oxford United did push on after Posh’s third, but Darren Ferguson’s side were determined to keep that clean sheet, with Christy Pym making an excellent save to keep out a goalbound header.
In the sixth minute of stoppage time Posh scored a fourth that really emphasised the work rate of the team.
At 3-0 up with less than a minute to play, you could have excused Posh for sitting back and taking the win, but this goal started with star striker Ivan Toney making a tackle on the edge of his own box, before pinging a ball 50+ yards to Sammy Szmodics.
Szmodics stay composed, and laid the ball over to Knight who scored his first goal since his return from injury and gave Szmodics his third assist of the afternoon.
FULL TIME: Peterborough United 4-0 Oxford United.
