Peterborough United were beaten comfortably by Premier League side Burnley at Turf Moor this afternoon to end their run in this season’s FA Cup.

The teamsheet for today’s game

The Clarets named a strong team for the third round tie, and their Premier League class showed from the start. They took the lead after just eight minutes when Jay Rodriguez tapped home following Christy Pym’s save from a Chris Wood header.

The lead was doubled just seven minutes later when a long range strike from full-back Erik Pieters flew past Pym into the bottom corner.

The tie was as good as over in the 23rd minute, when Jeff Hendrick’s shot was helped on the way into the net by Peterborough United captain Mark Beevers.

Burnley’s third goal seemed to spark Posh into life, and they pulled one back courtesy of a defensive howler by the host’s Matt Lowton.

The experienced defender attempted a header back to Joe Hart, but Ivan Toney got in the way, before rounding the former England international to reduce the arrears.

HALF TIME: Burnley 3-1 Peterborough United.

Posh started the second half well, but found themselves three goals behind again within seven minutes of the restart.

Aaron Lennon’s clever reverse pass was finished off by Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez for his second of the afternoon to restore the host’s three goal advantage.

Peterborough looked far more assured during the second half, but they rarely threatened the Premier League side until young striker Ricky-Jade Jones popped up with a moment he will never forget.

The 17-year old striker poked him from a corner to score his second goal in this season’s FA Cup for Posh and make the scoreline a little more presentable for the Sky Bet League One side.

FULL TIME: Burnley 4-2 Peterborough United.
